How youth communication works in Woggle

Woggle uses Unit permissions, Channel audiences, youth posting settings, Household relationships, and guardian visibility to shape youth communication. These controls work together, so access to one Channel does not create access to every Unit conversation.

Woggle supports your safety process

Woggle’s controls do not replace youth-protection training, organization or council policy, mandated reporting duties, or adult judgment. Use the rules that apply to your organization when deciding whether and how youth participate.

Unit roles set the starting permissions

A person’s Unit role sets their baseline access:

• Unit Admins can manage Unit messaging settings and Channel access.
• Leaders can create and manage Channels when Unit settings allow it.
• Parents/Guardians and Youth Members can open and participate in Channels only when the Channel audience and messaging settings allow it.

Channel responsibilities can narrow that baseline. A Channel leader can manage that Channel without receiving Unit-wide administration access.

Unit Admins can open Settings, then Roles & Permissions, to review the Unit’s current messaging controls.

Messaging rules control Unit-wide conversation choices. Channel audiences still determine who can enter each conversation.

Channel audiences control who can participate

Every Channel has an audience. A whole-Unit Channel includes the Unit audience, a Group Channel follows the selected Group roster, and a Custom Channel uses its selected members.

Youth access follows that audience. A Youth Member who is not part of the Channel audience cannot enter the conversation because another Unit role can. For the complete setup path, use How to choose a Channel audience.

Unit settings control youth posting

Under Messaging rules, a Unit Admin can review:

• Allow unit and group conversations
• Let youth post
• Let adults message youth directly

Turning off Let youth post keeps a Youth Member from sending messages in Channels they can access. Turning it on allows posting only in eligible Channels; it does not widen the Channel audience.

Woggle warns before a Unit Admin turns on Let adults message youth directly. That option is stored, but Woggle does not currently provide a verified direct-message workflow, and its current Channel and message rules do not enforce the stored direct-message settings. Do not rely on this option as a youth-safety control. Guardian visibility continues to apply in supported private Channels that include a Youth Member.

These Unit-wide choices affect what eligible members can do after Channel access is established.

Household relationships establish guardian context

Open Household and confirm that each Youth Member is connected to the correct parent or guardian. A linked account lets a Youth Member sign in, but it does not replace the Household relationship.

Household shows the guardian and Youth Member relationships Woggle uses for family context.

Ask a Household Guardian to correct a Household relationship. Ask a Unit Admin to correct a Unit roster or Channel-audience problem.

Guardians receive read-only visibility

Guardians receive read-only visibility into private Channels that include their Youth. This visibility lets a Guardian see the conversation without granting permission to post. Channel membership history also limits the period of conversation that is visible.

The Youth safety rules screen describes Guardian visibility as a protection that Unit Admins cannot turn off.

Guardian visibility follows the Youth Member’s eligible conversation context and does not grant posting access.

Guardian visibility is a product control, not a guarantee that every conversation follows an organization’s policy. Adults still need to choose the correct audience and supervision practice.
